Battle for the Iron Throne

Twitch Stunt

Ahead of the season finale of HBO’s House of the Dragon S3, Twitch commissioned an unprecedented, live stream-takeover event: The Battle for the Iron Throne.

The objective was to transform passive viewers into active combatants by allowing streamers of all sizes to battle for supremacy in real-time. To make this high-stakes tournament possible, we engineered a custom master control panel capable of orchestrating live gameplay across hundreds of concurrent streams.

Through a set of two interactive, Chat-driven mini-games, we tested audience lore knowledge and streamer loyalty in exchange for glory - effectively turning streamers into Generals and their fan bases into their armies.

Over six hours of continuous live gameplay, a remote centralized Admin Panel pushed dynamic game states and real-time graphics overlays across the entire participating streaming network. By pairing authentic Twitch culture with the visual language of Westeros, we delivered a seamless, large-scale live stunt that broadened creator access and redefined interactive brand activations.

Our approach

To make the tournment a massive success, we focused on maxmizing accessibility for reach and technical stability for seamless gameplay.

We designed a centralized campaign microsite where micro-streamers and major creators alike could enlist, automatically populating a live roster and receiving dynamic URLs to integrate directly into their streaming software. To eliminate operational stress for participants and maintain synchronization, a remote Twitch Gamesmaster controlled real-time graphics and game states through a universal Admin Panel, allowing streamers to stay fully focused on engaging their audiences.

We developed two custom mini-games tailored to native Twitch behaviors: a lore trivia challenge decided by real-time Chat answers; and "The Dragon Emote" battle, where Chat spammed a custom !Vhagar emote to fuel the scoreboard. To keep micro-streamers on equal footing with massive channels, gameplay relied on active audience participation density rather than sheer channel size.

Backed by dedicated Discord technical support and an on-demand Games Master Leaderboard, we maintained tight live moderation and seamless execution across 24 consecutive rounds of play.

The results

The Battle for the Iron Throne brought Westeros to life across the platform, driving unprecedented creator participation and organic community enthusiasm.

Over 890 creators opted in purely out of brand love, rallying their communities across 24 intense concurrent battles. The single-night activation generated millions of social and stream impressions while engaging over 780,000 unique viewers in a unified, live event.

By combining custom overlays, real-time data sync, live ops moderation, surprise cast Q&As and sub drops, the event set a new benchmark for branded live entertainment on Twitch and claimed its place in streaming history.
