Universal Pictures' Creative Innovation team wanted to amplify the home entertainment release of Puss in Boots The Last Wish and reward buyers of the DVD with an exciting digital experience that immersed them in Mama Luna's cattery.
Our approach
Employing the latest in cutting-edge conversational AI and webGL technologies, Powster created a full-fledged web game that immersed users in the world of Mama Luna's cat rescue sanctuary where they could adopt and chat with their very own feline friend!
Team Powster modelled, textured, rigged and animated the exterior and interior of Mama Luna's house, setting up the experience with an epic entrance into her colorful home.
Once at the front door, the experience began with a fun mini-quiz that assigned each user one of five distinct cat personalities and voices, powered by Charisma AI. To finalize the creation, Powster’s custom textures randomized fur, markings, and eye colors, "skinning" a unique 3D pet and guaranteeing one of hundreds of possibilities.
With the set-up complete, the user's gameplay truly began inside Mama Luna's living room. By leveraging native browser voice recognition, the user could speak to their pet and receive replies back. Each cat's personality shined through their unique backstory, language and voice, as well as physical reactions and movement.
In addition to chatting to their cat, users could play with them throughout the room - running about, jumping on furniture, feeding them and petting them.
Through connected user accounts owners could return when they wanted to see their new pet for the duration of the ‘foster period,’ — just like a Tamagotchi. As a personal keepsake, they received an adoption certificate shareable of their cat, complete with its new name.
The results
Puss in Boots the Last Wish clawed to success at the box office earning a worldwide total of $484M+, and animated feature Oscar nomination.
Released on Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD on February 28, the activation gave extra digital value to audiences at home, and was a first-of-its-kind AI companion — allowing audiences to engage and converse directly with feline characters without any barrier to entry.
